Magical and romantic hideaway, a taxi ride from Carcassonne
10.0We had the most wonderful stay here and it will remain one of the highlights of our trip to France. The house itself is absolutely beautiful – a rustic former Catholic chapitre full of history and character. If you appreciate old buildings with soul, this place is magical. Our rooms were incredibly spacious and we were fortunate to have two interconnecting rooms, which worked perfectly for our family with children. The hospitality from Madame Agnès was exceptional. She prepared us a delicious homemade dinner of melon with ham, followed by roast pork with ratatouille and sautéed potatoes, and finished with a beautiful pavlova. My daughter has coeliac disease, and Agnès very kindly adapted the entire meal so it was gluten free. That level of care and generosity meant so much to us, and we are incredibly grateful. This isn’t a hotel for people looking for corporate luxury, televisions in every room or the latest mod cons. It’s for travellers seeking something authentic. It’s a peaceful hideaway where you can slow down and experience a little of rural French life. I could imagine it being a perfect writers’ retreat, a wonderfully romantic escape for couples, or simply somewhere for anyone wanting to immerse themselves in French culture and hospitality. The elegant swimming pool, built in the 1960s, has a timeless, almost cinematic atmosphere. We swam twice during our one-night stay and loved every minute. Like the house itself, it’s full of charm rather than perfection, and that’s exactly what makes it so special. Although I don’t believe the property is served by public transport, reaching it was easy. We took a taxi from Carcassonne, and the following day Madame Agnès kindly arranged another taxi to the airport. The journey was quick thanks to the property’s convenient location close to the motorway. I’ve stayed in many hotels over the years, but I’ve rarely experienced such genuine hospitality. We felt more like welcomed guests than customers.
