It sent me to another booking company and I reserved a room on Jan. 15th. We arrived early and called to get an early check in. There was NO FRONT DESK to check in. There were NO PEOPLE on the property. We waited till check in time. We waited another half hour (in a blizzard) in the parking lot. NO ONE EVER SHOWED UP. THE PROPERTY WAS APPARENTLY CLOSED FOR THE SEASON. Now they refuse to refund my money. They are still booking rooms and cabins on at least 3 booking sites. Beware! This place will scam you. Just up the road from the casino soaked town of Deadwood, this place has more charm and class than anything we found over there. A (I am assuming) family run establishment perched atop a hill, this place consists on a few cabins with one or two motel rooms in each. It's filled to the brim with kitsch and the family that runs it is sweet as pie (Grandma even stayed up late so we could check in at 11:15pm! I LOVE HER!). We went in the off season and called 3pm the day off to get a room and had our pick of the litter, they did say it fills up quick in the summer. The beds were comfortable, the rooms were clean and you couldn't beat the price (I think it was $50). Everytime I am in South Dakota I am going to go out of my way to stay here. me: "where would you recommend we go for breakfast?" lady at desk: "well, i just wish the burger king hadn't closed..." So we tried to used their fan which had broken legs. Then after our stay we were charged an extra $30 because they said we broke the fan, which we absolutely did not! They didn't tell us about it and they would not return our calls. I had to trick the lady to call me back by leaving a message about renting a new room and when on the phone finally she became completely hysterical and yelled at me about how we "trashed the room" because we left sheets on the floor... we didn't use some of the bedding because it was so hot. The only reason we rented a room here for 4 in our group because the ad says it sleeps 6. We reserved through Expedia which defaults to 2 and forgot to change it. We acknowledged 4 would be staying with us when checking in and she charged us extra for that as well. I recommend the Hampton Inn up the street where the rest of our group stayed. I can honestly say I loved this place. It's laid back and comfortable. The owner checked me in and showed me to my room and afterwards sat out on the front porch and talked with me for two hours like we were old friends. The room was clean and had everything I needed and then some. The price was awesome and I'll definitely be going back to this area in the future and will be staying at the Ponderosa again. Check-in was fast and efficient; the owner (and her sister) were super friendly and helpful as well. The room was incredibly clean and spacious; the bathroom was plenty big and had everything I needed for my stay. Add to this a fridge, and a small table (think I had a microwave too? can't remember, but pretty sure I did)... and it was pretty much perfect. The bed was insanely comfortable, as was the little loveseat in the room. Only downside was that the walls are a tiny bit thin and having brainlessly noisy neighbors on either side of the room can get a bit annoying, but that is no reason to dock the establishment on a review (it's more a mention regarding general noise level - between the highway and brainless, loud ninnies.. bring earplugs, and you'll sleep like a baby). No complaints! Great place. Small,cozy cabin. Heated up quick. Bed was super comfortable and linens/quilt were clean and fresh. We arrived 8pm and Judith got us settled. Very friendly and helpful. We left early so didn't use the kitchen but it looked nicely stocked. Shower was hot. We did need our own shampoo which I had. UCK! This place should be condemned by the board of health. Dark, dingy and dated. Everything in the room was sticky including the carpet I was afraid to walk on it in my bare feet. The couch looked like it had been dug out of the town dump it was so filthy I had to use a bath towel to cover the couch to sit on and was still afraid to sit on it or use the couch pillows. The room smelled of mold, mildew, something unidentifiable and animals. The hot water in the shower was at best cool, not hot very disappointing after a long day of driving. There was black hair in the showers, soap dispenser empty and no shampoo, or wash cloths. The towels were also dirty and used. There were moldy shower curtains (yes, both showers were disgusting.) The bedding had not been changed and had been slept in more than once (not by me) and the linens smelled and were dirty and were not fresh and clean. There was also animal hair, and black human hair in the bed. You could tell someone had used and slept on the pillow cases. Bugs crawling around the walls and window sills. The remote for the TV did not work. The curtains were see-through. There was cat hair on everything even the lamp shade. There was communal coffee for morning that God only knows who had used it and dug around in it. The coffee was literally poured in an open sandwich bag and totally unsanitary. The dirty old fan in the bedroom had grease on the fan blades. I found out when I got home I had contracted a severe case of ringworm from sleeping here. YES... Ringworm!!! Avoid this place at all cost... And, that cost was an outrageous $85 a night. Couldn't have been more gross... DISGUSTING... Unhealthy... Don't let the cute exterior fool you... Dr. said that she would probably die within 1 week due to severity of head trauma. I had already made prior arrangements to pay our rent on the 8th as I get paid biweekly. Joyce had started calling and demanding money on January 1st because we had told them we had a family emergency and had to go to Michigan. As if I wasn't under enough stress already I had reminded her that I get paid on the 8th and the agreement that we had made. She continued to call and harass me daily and insisted that we return to south dakota. I agreed to pay late fee charges but didn't have the full amount at the time. We have a very small car and two children so we didn't take much with us. My wife returned to make a payment and put our stuff into storage. Dan said that she could come make a payment and clean the cabin out. However when she got there she was denied access for two days. They went through our belongings kept what they wanted and threw the rest out in the snow and told my wife to come and get it. Although our stuff was only there for two weeks and a lot of it either missing or damaged they still charged us for the whole month plus late fees and cleaning fees. Our $100 cleaning deposit was never acknowledged but we was charged an additional $150 for cleaning even though we was denied the opportunity to clean ourselves. My family and I are from des moines iowa up here on vacation this place is so disgusting with old nasty expired food in the fridge from the owner who I guess stays here some times. the bedding has stains from you know what. theres spiders here the pull out sofa bed has mouse feces on it. the dishes here are filthy with mouse stuff. this is the most awful place I have ever had the displeasure of staying there isnt any house keeping of any kind. it just feels so dirty and gross here. The bottom line is this place is tacky and disgusting basically a biker lodge. DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY HERE! at least not Cabin number 1, which is connected to the main office, when you look at this online it looks like it is separate. Gorgeous renovated cabin

Our room on the end of the cabin was excellent. The room and the bathroom were large. AC worked well. Everything was newer or renovated here and it was a job well done. Loved the smart tv option. Mini fridge was great, as was the microwave — we got a late dinner at Smokin Jays BBQ and were able to microwave it once we wanted to eat, which was great.

Visited South Dakota over the 4th of July and had a great time with friends visiting parks and towns around the area.

Such a great place to stay! The location was amazing and so close to all the towns I wanted to visit! This was a first for me that my stay made me feel so at home I didn’t want to leave! The rooms were clean and cool (great a/c) and I enjoyed sitting by the bonfire at night after long days seeing all the sights. You can tell the owners love South Dakota and want their visitors to truly enjoy their stay!

Cozy and convenient

This was our 5th year traveling to the Black Hills for a summer getaway. Our stay at Ponderosa Pines was the most affordable, convenient and fun so far. Our family of 4 had plenty of room and everything we needed in cabin 7. Our friends stayed in another cabin and our kids had fun exploring the property and playing in the grass by the fire pit together. There were lots of places on the property to sit and enjoy the outdoors for the adults too. I saw some previous reviews about traffic noise -- but we honestly didn't notice it at all. Groceries and other necessities are super close, and we even rented some UTVs for the day one day (just up the hill). Already talking about our next stay!

Can’t wait to book again!

We had a week long stay in Cabin #8 at the Ponderosa Pines. We had a very full but relaxing stay. We got to do many day trips around the area: Reptile Garden, Bear Country USA, Mount Rushmore and many UTV and hiking trails. It was so nice seeing these close attractions and getting to come home to an enchanting and lovely cabin. I loved the wilderness and rustic feel but the convenience of being close to Lead to run into town for good food, groceries and gas. Overall great get away.

Wonderful Stay in Cabin 5!

Our family of four (including two teenagers) stayed in Cabin 5 over the holiday weekend and had a fantastic experience. The cabin was clean, comfortable, and cozy—perfect for relaxing after a day of exploring. We really appreciated how well-maintained everything was, and the space was just right for our family. The location is excellent, with easy access to Lead, Central City, and Deadwood. It made day trips simple and enjoyable, and we loved coming back to such a cozy setting each evening. Highly recommend for families or anyone looking for a quiet, convenient getaway in the Black Hills area. We’d definitely stay here again!
