Piggels Retreat is undoubtedly set in a peaceful and beautiful location, and the surroundings themselves are lovely if you are looking for quiet countryside scenery and a relaxing atmosphere. Unfortunately, despite the setting, our overall experience did not justify the £400 cost for two nights. The biggest issue was the bathroom facilities. The listing described the bathroom as being “a short walk away,” but in reality it was around 100 metres from the cabin. As someone with multiple disabilities and mobility issues, this had a huge impact on my stay and was not something clearly disclosed beforehand. During wet weather, the bridge leading to the facilities was also slippery due to worn grips and a noticeable slope, which made it feel unsafe and difficult to manage. What upset me most, however, was the host’s attitude after I raised my concerns. Instead of showing understanding or professionalism, comments were made suggesting that because I “looked comfortable” with my walking stick, my mobility struggles were somehow less valid. Disabilities and pain are not always visible, and I found this remark incredibly upsetting and dismissive from someone who had only just met me. I make a conscious effort to push through pain and enjoy experiences as best I can, despite my conditions, so having my difficulties judged based on appearance alone felt insensitive and hurtful. The host also joked about giving me a “piggy back” to the bathroom, which I found inappropriate given the situation. The distance to the toilet genuinely impacted my stay. There were occasions where I physically struggled to make it there in time because of pain and mobility difficulties, which was distressing and embarrassing. This is why accurate accessibility information matters so much. I will say that the cabin area itself was relaxing and scenic, and we did appreciate the peaceful atmosphere.
