I did not know Takayama and took a guess with the location and what the pictures of the property showed. It and Takayama have been the highlight so far of our trip to Japan. I only wish we had stayed a few days more. Would highly recommend, the property was just wonderful and you are literally 2 minutes walk to the old town and the riverside walk

Lovely place!

Beautiful house, lots of space, fully equipped kitchen. Steep stairs no problem at all for us but they are steep! We all loved the outdoor bath and the sauna. Also Japanese style pyjamas! Great location, everything easily walkable. Owner extremely helpful when we accidentally left something behind.

Not a problem for us but some people might not want traditional futon sleeping. Our children loved it and loved seeing how the beds could be put back away in the huge cupboards.

A comfortable stay in a traditional townhouse in Takayama

10.0

I really enjoyed my stay at Guest House HINATA in Takayama! It was really fun to stay in a traditional townhouse, and the location is perfect, on a relatively quiet street but just a few minutes' walk from the beautiful historic region of Takayama and from the enjoyable Higashiyama Walking Course. The house is very clean and the sitting area in the kitchen is very comfortable. The bathroom and sitting area are downstairs while the bedrooms are upstairs. I was travelling with two friends. My friends stayed in the first bedroom with the Western-style twin beds, while I stayed in the second bedroom with the tatami mat floor and futons. I found the futon mattress a little thin, but there were more mattresses in the closet, so I doubled up the futon mattresses and after that found it very comfortable. We appreciated the laundry, with both a washing machine and a drier. The drier dried our clothes within a few hours, very quickly and efficiently compared to most driers we'd encountered during our stay in Japan. The townhouse is decorated with beautiful art, including some lovely paintings and a gorgeous antique fan. The star attraction of this lovely townhouse is the exceptional bathroom. There is both a sauna and a shower, and the bathtub is located just outside, in the pretty little fenced garden. We didn't use the sauna, since it was relatively hot while we were visiting, but I can imagine that it would be really lovely if you were staying during the winter. We loved soaking in the tub in the garden in the evening... such a perfect way to unwind and relax after a day of exploring beautiful Takayama! When we arrived, we were greeted by the cleaner, who had just finished, and she was very friendly. As we were leaving on our last day in Takayama, the same cleaner arrived while we were standing outside the townhouse, just getting ready to call a taxi to the train station. She kindly offered to drive us to the train station herself.

As other reviewers have mentioned, the stairs to the second floor are very steep. This is typical for a traditional townhouse in Japan, so was not unexpected, and we didn't find it to be a problem. However, because the bathroom is downstairs while the bedrooms are upstairs, if you need to get up frequently during the night to use the toilet, and you find steep stairs difficult, you might not enjoy staying here. The upstairs has two bedrooms, but these two bedrooms are only separated by thin sliding walls, so it is easy to hear sounds from one bedroom while in the other. Also, to get from the second bedroom to the stairs to the first floor, you need to walk through the first bedroom. None of this was a problem for us, and we really enjoyed our stay, but if you want a place where the bedrooms are completely private, then you might not enjoy staying here.
