One Star for the Mattress, One Star for the Attitude

I'm not sure why this hostel gets such good critiques. Let’s just say our stay here was… character-building. The mattress was impressively hard, like, possibly filled with bricks? Combine that with a stuffy, humid room and no window screen, and we spent our nights swatting mosquitoes and gnats (our bites itched for a full week). Check-in for us wasn’t until 6pm, which was insanely inconvenient. And there was no kitchen or microwave that we could use, so don’t come hungry. There is a fridge in a common area, but that turned into a drama of its own. A housekeeper told us to keep it locked… then the hostess got upset because we locked it. Schrödinger’s fridge, apparently. What really made the stay memorable, though, was the unsolicited language lesson. We’re foreigners, yes, but we’ve actually been learning Portuguese before coming to Brazil and we were doing our best. Instead, we got a mini lecture from the hostess about how she would learn the language if she went abroad. It was unnecessary and came off as pretty arrogant, especially given we were already putting in the effort.
