The host did not communicate about the booking until the next morning and refused to let me stay the evening I arrived, claiming there was no booking. I contacted booking.com for a refund as I had to find other accommodation .

Owner was very helpful and considerate, particularly supportive as my wife had broken wrist.

Nothing. Coral took our booking in December; took our money in March; cancelled our booking when we arrived to check in; refunded our payment to someone else’s credit card; and left us stranded in a strange town without the accommodation we had paid for, needing to find replacement accommodation and pay for it again. When we later questioned the failure of the refund to appear, apparently she has a clear policy of no refunds, and I would agree, had WE cancelled the stay. Also, for a company with a clear policy of no refunds, WHY did she give me a credit card refund slip, with someone else's credit card details on? Yes, we told her it was the wrong card at the time, we showed her the card to refund too, but she told us it was "booking.com's" card. I wonder, of the dozen or so reviews of this type, were we all catching the ferry the following day? Do Travellers leaving town the next day make for a much easier mark? All I can hope is that the NZD$220 she stole from me is compensation enough for the review I am leaving her.

The short version, for those not wanting to read the full story is that I found the hotelier, Coral, to be particularly rude and prickly, and her actions could almost amount to fraud. She took our booking, took our money, cancelled our booking, refunded our money to someone else’s credit card, and left us stranded in a strange town without the accommodation we had paid for, needing to find replacement accommodation and pay for it again. I cannot recommend that ANYONE stay with her – my personal experience is that she let the room we had booked and paid for out to someone else, and when I complained that she wasn’t fulfilling her contract, she CANCELLED my booking with Booking.com and paid my refund to someone else’s credit card. This left us stranded, late in the afternoon, in an unfamiliar town, and without accommodation for the night. I suggest you do a lot more digging before you book any stay with this establishment and check out the 1-star reviews – they paint a similar picture over time.
