Don’t expect politeness or flexibility

8.0

This is a hyper-typical German Gasthof. The owner is clearly VERY proud of his wine list. The place is immaculate - beautiful furnishings and incredibly clean and tidy inside and out. Beds very comfortable but no aircon which meant a slightly uncomfortable night in the June heatwave. The breakfast was lovely.

I would happily have given this place a “9” but didn’t because the two staff members we encountered were totally inflexible and obviously did not like the Brits. We told the hotel in advance that we would be arriving late (around 9pm, so not ludicrously late). Having summoned the only server on the premises, we asked if we would have a drink on the terrace where diners were finishing their dinner. After some persuasion, he brought us a delicious bottle of local wine. When asked for anything to accompany it (even some bread or bretzels) he was totally flummoxed and amazed. “Nein”. The following morning, we were phoned in our room by the breakfast server forty minutes before the end of breakfast service to confirm we were coming down. More a command than a request. During breakfast, I politely asked whether there was somewhere in the (totally deserted) hotel where my wife could do 1-2 hours’ work whilst I had a walk through the beautiful vineyards around the village. Again “Nein”. No explanation, apology or otherwise - just “Nein”. I suspect that this place does very well out of high-end diners and wine buffs. They just could not be bothered with people who want b&b. Shame.
